Navajo Weapons
Native Americans actually only had a few weapons. However, there was often many versions of the same weapon throughout the many North American tribes. Of course, the bow and arrow was common to all, followed by some form of knife and hatchets or tomahawks. Also most tribes possessed some form of cudgel, mallet, or "war club". Then there are the spears or lances which are more common to the "plains" tribes. As a defensive weapon shields were also used by a few select cultures. The Navajo have a tradition of wielding all of the above. Today's peaceful Navajo, have no need for their traditional weapons, however they seem to have developed a special talent for handcrafting stunningly attractive Navajo weapons for the tourist and collector trade. Often these are embellished with intricate carvings and then adorned with leather bindings, feathers, fur, beads, or other significant items. Navajo weapons are highly desirable as unique examples of Native American art, and sold worldwide to collectors.
Also, it is commonly believed that displaying a Navajo weapon near your dwelling's doorway brings good fortune by warding away evil. That may explain why Navajo weapons have become so popular for southwestern and western style decorating. Perhaps, a Navajo bow, tomahawk, lance or war club would be that perfect piece of Native American artwork to accent your home decor.
