Beginning around 1890 the merchants running Indian trading posts began to encourage the Navajo to weave slightly larger and heavier rugs. They found that when Navajo tribal designs where woven as rugs rather than blankets the demand for them exploded. Over the next few decades, Navajo rugs became the premier art form that it is today.

The Navajo culture seems to have an inherent talent for weaving exceptionally fine carpets. Navajo woolen textiles are recognized as a major art form, throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. When we think of the Native American Indian art the exquisitely woven rugs of the Navajo Indians are considered to have no equal. No other Southwestern styled rug has ever rivaled those of the Navajo in popularity and demand.
