Navajo Pottery
More than any other Indian culture, Navajo potters have evolved into renown artisans. Contemporary Navajo pottery is considered some of the most desirable and sought after fired ceramics by collectors of native American arts. However, that was NOT always so. This was because traditionally the Navajo rarely decorated their pottery. For hundreds of years, Navajo have been making pottery - cooking pots, bowls and a variety of storage containers - primarily for home use. Navajo pottery was functional, unadorned, plain red clay - often referred to as "mud pots". Compared to other southwestern tribal cultures, early Navajo pottery just didn't stand out. That all changed In the 1960s, as the market and demand for traditional Native American crafts exploded. Navajo potters began to turn their inherited artistic abilities to producing fired clay creations for the tourists and collectors of Indian art. Once begun, the Navajo's special talent for creating stunningly beautiful pottery blossomed.
Though the techniques of today's Navajo potters may not be traditional to their culture, the styles, and designs used to embellish their ceramics draws on rich tribal heritages and religious symbolism. Today Navajo pottery is usually hand painted and fired outdoors, one pot at a time in an open pit, using Juniper wood. It's these authentic earthy handcrafted techniques that draw collectors and interior decorators to Navajo pottery.
