Navajo Peace Pipes

Navajo Peace PipesSome of the most beautiful of all Native American artistic creations are the Navajo Peace Pipes. However the word "peace pipe" is a misnomer, given by European settlers based on only one type of pipe and how it was used. The terms "medicine pipe" or "ceremonial pipe" might be more appropriate, since the significance of Native American ritual pipes often encompassed much more than just the sealing of a treaty. Traditionally the "pipe" was brought forth and smoked on  ritual  occasions, which varied from tribe to tribe. The ceremonial pipe serves somewhat as a portable altar, symbolically forming a bridge for communicating with the "great spirits" and influencing fates or outcomes. It was an integral part of the Indians political life, inter tribal conferences and treaty negotiations. Navajo peace pipes were also  used by Medicine men  to heal the sick and ward off danger.

The Navajo seem to have a special talent for creating stunningly beautiful peace pipes. Today's pipes are adorned with feathers, fur, beads, quills, carvings and other significant items, while still remaining true to their tribal heritages. Navajo peace pipes are highly desirable as supreme examples of Native American art, and sold worldwide to collectors. Many contemporary Americans believe that displaying an authentic Navajo peace pipe bestows "good fortune" to a dwelling.
