Navajo Paintings & Watercolors
Perhaps the most impressive tradition of native American artistic abilities belongs to the Navajo Indians. However, oil painting and watercolors are NOT traditional Navajo Indian art forms. What few painting customs that did exist, where limited to symbols and decorations on dwellings, and cliff faces. That changed in 1932 with the opening of the painting studio at the Santa Fe Indian School. Not only did the government funded school provide art instructions in various mediums, it actively encouraged native Americans to adopt styles, techniques and subject matter that depicted their own people, experiences, customs, and ceremonies. The Studio was the initial training grounds for seven significant Navajo masters. From that core, hundreds of skilled Navajo artists evolved over the next three generations. The Navajo seem to have a special talent for creating stunningly beautiful paintings and watercolors. Though the techniques of today's Navajo paintings are not traditional to their culture, the styles, designs, and subject matter usually draws on tribal heritages, and the richness of their own lands and people. Their colorful artwork often depicts remote landscapes, and Navajo life such as ceremonial dress, dancers, horsemen and Navajo women.
Many Navajo paintings are highly desirable by enthusiasts of contemporary Native American art, and sold worldwide to collectors. Also, as any interior designer knows, displaying an authentic Navajo painting can be a very impressive feature of Southwestern room decor.
