Centuries ago, the Hopi Indians began carving Kachina dolls. They were originally made to represent the Katsinas, or “Spirit Beings”. They were then given to their nieces and daughters, with the purpose of teaching the child the outfits and body paintings of the many various "Katsinas". Today, the Hopi and the Navajo both embrace the creation of Kachina figurines. However, the Navajo do not hold any spiritual beliefs around the Kachina dolls, for them their stunning dolls are about economics rather than religion.
