Navajo Fetishes & Carvings

Many Native American tribes carve small animals and figures commonly known as "fetishes". They are made from many natural materials such as ivory, amber, turquoise, antler, shell, alabaster, and onyx. To the Navajo these carvings are believed to have inherited powers - the spiritual soul of the animal or icon it represents, and are able to act as "mediators" between themselves and a higher power. When properly taken care of, they protect and guide their owner.

No doubt the first fetishes were carved as "hunting" fetishes, used to ensure a successful hunt. Later, fetishes were carved to bring good fortune, protect households, or assure a plentiful harvest. Still other fetishes were believed to help with treating disease, achieving fertility, bringing rain, and protecting from enemies. They were also many fetishes that were used in tribal ceremonies and rituals to evoke specific "spirits".

The Navajo seem to have a special talent for creating stunningly beautiful fetishes. Today's authentic hand craved Navajo fetishes have evolved into works of art, expressing the artisan's individual style while remaining true to their Navajo heritage.They are viewed as a form of contemporary Native American art, and sold worldwide to collectors. Also, as many interior designers know, displaying several authentic Navajo fetish carvings can be an impressive feature of Southwestern room decor.
