Navajo Kachina Dolls Video

Each Navajo Kachina Doll is a stunningly beautiful

one of a kind work of art.

"Authentic" Kachina dolls are made only by certain the Hopi and Zuni Indians. Dolls carved by these tribes have deep religious significances, and represent "Katsinas" or "spirits". They are therefore the most expensive - when you can find them - as most are kept for their own tribal ceremonies.

Fortunately, the Navajo - close neighbors of the Hopi and Zuni - have also enthusiastically  adopted the custom of making Kachina dolls. However, the religious traditions around them are not as important for the Navajo as it is for the Hopi or Zuni. While the Navajo do hold a degree of reverence toward Kachina dolls, their motive for the creation of Kachinas is more economical than spiritual. It is this lack of strict religious directives that allow them to be much more liberal to embellish their dolls in an individually stylized and artistic way.

Therefore, Navajo Kachinas are typically more lavishly adorned by the addition of eagle feathers, rabbit's fur, leather, shells, beads and a host of other materials to bring out a unique Navajo style. Each is detailed with different clothing and accessories, that express the "mood" and "style" of the individual craftsman, making each a "one of a kind" creation.
